Zocor FAQ
What is Zocor?
Zocor, manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co., is the trademark name for the drug simvastatin, a cholesterol lowering prescription drug. Zocor helps to lower cholesterol by inhibiting the production of cholesterol in the liver. It also interrupts cholesterol synthesis and lipoprotein consumption, which reduces a patient's cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Excessive amounts of cholesterol in the body can lead to heart disease and other serious health problems.
Are there any side effects of taking 80 mg Zocor?
Those who take a high dosage of Zocor are at risk for side effects including abdominal cramps, digestive issues and respiratory problems. But the biggest risk is that of sustaining muscle injury. Breakdown of muscle tissues can also lead to a condition called rhabdomyolysis. This condition can cause kidney damage or even death.
If my doctor has prescribed Zocor and I'm already taking it, what can I possibly do?
It would be highly advisable to stop using Zocor and seek out a second opinion from another doctor. You should immediately stop taking the drug if you experience any Zocor symptoms or serious side effects. You should also see red flags if your physician failed to ask you questions about your health history or run blood tests prior to prescribing Zocor. Your doctor is required to make sure that you do not have any prior health-related problems before prescribing this medication. Failure to do so could lead to serious side effects and complications.
Why do doctors continue to prescribe Zocor despite FDA warnings about serious side effects?
This is a tough question to answer. One can only presume that when a pharmaceutical company continues to sell dangerous drugs or physicians continue to prescribe these drugs that they are essentially putting profits before the safety and well-being of consumers and patients. If you doctor prescribes 80 mg Zocor despite your health problems, that is nothing short of negligence.
